What is a shade?
A shade is a variation of a colour — the same hue made lighter (a tint), darker (a shade) or less saturated (a tone). Every colour has a whole family of shades, each with its own name and HEX code. Pick a colour above to see its named shades and copy any HEX.
From a shade to real paint
Found a shade you like? Each one links to its full colour page with the nearest real paint across 16 brands (Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Dulux and more), so you can take any shade straight to a can. Want to convert a code? Use the colour converter.
Our color tools run on our own catalogue of 26,000+ real paint colors across 16 brands — Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Dulux, RAL and more — with the color math (HSL and CIELAB matching) computed in-house, not scraped from summaries. Every color you pick maps to a real, buyable paint with its code, so what you see here you can actually take to the store. We review and update these tools and their data regularly.
